As the temperatures rise and summer holidays are in sight, many of us have started to plan our summer activities. You may be finally taking that holiday, seeing your family again, or just spending time at your local pool or beach - but remember, no matter what you’re doing, you always need to be safe!

Every year people risk their lives by not following simple safety guidelines. That’s why we created these tips to help you be safe this summer:

  1. Stay hydrated – being out in the sun for long periods of time can be draining. Make sure to drink plenty of water when you are spending the day out and about. Always ensure a bottle of water (or two) are part of your summer daily pack list!

  1. Wear sunscreen – it’s a rule that everyone knows but can easily forget the importance of. Sunscreen is the best defence for skin cancers and melanoma. Try to make sure yours is at least 30SPF!

  1. Know what to do if you are in trouble – different water ways come with different risks, make sure you know how to call for help should you ever need it. Raise your hand out of the water to signal for help, stand or move the shallow area if you can, float on your back and call for help.

  1. Keep Watch Around Water – You will see the signs at every public swimming area, be sure to keep watch of your children or weaker swimmers when in and around the water. Our best advice is to nominate a ‘watch adult’ and take turn monitoring your family and friends.

  1. Know the effects of sun stroke – sun stroke generally appears when you are exposed to high temperatures for a long time. If not treated, it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, red skin, and shallow breathing. To prevent sun stroke, try and find some shade or a fan, wear sunscreen, and drink lots of water!

  1. Check the conditions – be sure to always check the weather and water conditions before heading out for the day. If you are swimming be sure to check for the tide and rips. If the UV index is 6 or higher, sun protection is vital!

  1. Pay attention to mother nature – animals, poisonous plants, and erosion can all be a danger to you and your family, and, along the same lines, you can be a danger to planet earth! Make a conscious effort to not litter or remove plants from their natural habitat this summer.

  1. Use insect repellent – those Aussie mosquitos can really ruin a nice summer barbecue. Make sure you are protecting yourself from insects by wearing long-sleeved clothing, using mosquito netting, and of course wearing a strong bug repellent!

  1. Learn CPR and First Aid – everybody should have some basic knowledge in first aid and CPR. If you have never learnt CPR, 2022 might be your year to learn!

  1. Learn to Swim – learning to swim is a skill for life! No matter what age, learning to swim is the best way to be safer around water.

Remember: If you ever feel unsafe this summer, make sure you talk to a guardian or responsible adult where possible!

Now go and enjoy your holidays!
